Allen J. Cook Jr., 78, dies

Columbus, OH — Allen J. Cook Jr., “Cookie,” 78, of Smyrna, Del., died at home with his family by his side on July 13, 2020.

Mr. Cook was born June 28, 1942, in Chestertown, Md., the son of the late Allen J. Cook Sr. and Madeline (Haley) Cook.

He worked for the State of Delaware, Department of Transportation, for 37 years, retiring as a Highway Maintenance Superintendent. Following his retirement, he held the position of Associate and Presiding Judge for harness racing at Dover Downs and Harrington Raceway. He also worked as a Highway Inspector for Prime and Century Engineering. He was on the board of directors for the Delaware State Fair. He thoroughly enjoyed his careers.

Mr. Cook was an avid NASCAR fan, attending many races over the past 50 years, always looking forward to the Daytona 500 race in February.

Above all, he enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren’s sporting events and spending time with them.

He is survived by his sons, Allen J. III, Dale (Debbie) and Shawn (Stacy); grandchildren, Courtney, Jarrett, Brendan, Cassidy, and Kenley; niece, Morgan; fiancee, Betty J. Richardson; brother, Tom (Beth); step-mother, Nancy; former wife, Judy; uncle, Billy (Louise); and many close friends and acquaintances.

At his request, services will be privately held.
