Andrew Nazarian, 87, dies

Columbus, OH — Andrew Nazarian, 87, died Oct. 16, 2013, at the Mercy Life Center in Guilderland, N.Y.

Born in Watervliet on Jan. 15, 1926, he was the son of the late Agajan and Virkina Tabakian Nazarian. Mr. Nazarian was a graduate of Watervliet High School and served with the United States Marines.

He operated several service stations early in his career and for more than 30 years, he was a Standardbred trainer, a job that he loved, at Saratoga Raceway where he operated Nazarian’s Stable before retiring in 1975 due to a back injury. In 1972, he was named the track’s Trainer of the Year.

He was a member of the Zaloga VFW Post in Albany and was a member of St. Peter Armenian Apostolic Church in Watervliet.

Mr. Nazarian is survived by his children, Andrew Jr. (Dianna) and John (Patricia); grandchildren, Andrew, Armen (JoAnn), Amy (Benjamin) Roberts, Matthew and James; great-grandchildren, Kelsey and Alexis Hoppins; siblings, John (Sonya), Dorothy Giunta, Marian (Alex) Arghanian, Lucy Krikorian and Gregory (Marjorie); and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nettie.
