Bailey belts a grand slam at Vernon

Vernon, NY — Vernon Downs’ leading driver Leon Bailey just keeps on racking up the wins, and he took four more to the winner’s circle on Friday night (June 25), including a win with Peggy J in the featured $6,000 distaff pace.

Dojea Gigi took the early lead in the feature, but Peggy J ($9.30) took control before hitting the first quarter in :26.4. She controlled a :55.1 half before separating herself from the field at three-quarters in 1:23.3. Turning for home, eventual runner-up Lets Draw (Chris Long) was all-out to chase, but never got close as Peggy J won in a lifetime best of 1:52. Jericho Diva (Ben McNeil) finished third.

Peggy J is a 4-year-old Quality Western mare owned by Paula Sarcone and trained by Jeff Sorenson. It was her sixth win of the season and the 12th of her career.

Bailey and Sorenson also combined for a victory with Nesh Cruiser ($4.10). Bailey also got wins with Dream On A Roll ($7.20) and With Or Without ($4.10).

Bailey leads all drivers with 42 wins. Justin Huckabone is second on the list with 21 victories. John MacDonald is third with 20 trips to the winner’s circle, while Jimmy Whittemore (17) and Chris Long (15) round out the top five.

With his two wins tonight, Sorenson leads all trainers with 14 wins. Jessica Okusko is second with 12 trips to the winner’s circle. Justin Huckabone is third with 11 tallies. Bruce Lauer is fourth with 10, and Claude Huckabone III is fifth with eight.

Brad Irvine picked up the 1,000th driving win of his career with Lucky Sevens ($12.20) in race seven. The 4-year-old Chapter Seven gelding is owned and trained by Leopold Sawyers.
