Barrel racing champion Slam Dunk Lobell retires

Columbus, OH — Slam Dunk Lobell, or “Duncan” as he is affectionately known, has been retired from competition at the age of 19.

“Duncan” was a nine-time world qualifier in the National Barrel Horse Association.

He was a nine-time world qualifier in the National Barrel Horse Association, plus he has been shown in Dressage, Pleasure, Halter and Roadster Under Saddle and done well in them all.

Slam Dunk Lobell earned just under $60,000 on the racetrack from 1997 through 2001. The son of Jate Lobell took a mark of 1:52.4 at the Meadowlands at both age four and five. Slam Dunk Lobell’s dam was the Justin Passing mare Singing Strings, who made $565,326 while racing in the 1980s.

Slam Dunk Lobell and his owner, Judith Catchpole, have been members of the USTA’s Standardbred Equine Program for many years. Since 1996, the Standardbred Equine Program has worked with off-the-track Standardbreds and their owners to educate the general public about the many disciplines at which Standardbreds excel once they are retired from racing.
