Beltrami wins GSY Series final

East Rutherford, NJ — With $17,000 up for grabs in the final GSY Series pacing event, held Friday (Dec. 6) at The Meadowlands, the amateurs did not disappoint.

Many horses left as the gate opened, and a scramble ensued with everyone trying to get position at or near the front. This left several horses parked on the outside for the entire mile, but also led to an exciting race and finish, which was won by Polak A and Tony Beltrami.

Polak A left hard from the six-hole and had command through a fast :27.1 quarter. His lead was short lived as Monica Banca, driving Anericanfirewater, came three-wide to wrestle the lead away just after the quarter and held that lead into the stretch. As this was happening, Settlemoir (Tyler Miller) and Da Magician (Mark Silva) sustained long overland journeys to try and get the win.

As the field hit the top of the stretch, horses were spread across the track six- and seven-wide. When they hit the finish line, it was the ground-saving pocket sitter Polak A that went on to a 1-1/4 length victory in 1:52.2. Willie Boots, with John Calabrese holding the lines, got up for second at 20-1, and Da Magician, with Mark Silva in the sulky, finished third after being parked the entire mile.

Polak A, an 11-year-old gelding by Pacific Fella, is owned by Beltrami and is trained by Vincent Fusco Jr. Instead of a blanket commemorating the win, a $250 check will be donated to a charity of Beltrami’s choice in his name.

The GSY races continue next Thursday (Dec. 13) at the Big M, with post time scheduled for 7:15 p.m.
