Blooded Horse Sale Fall sale review

Springfield, OH – The 74th Annual Fall Blooded Horse Sale held on Tuesday (Nov. 16) in Springfield, Ohio broke all records for a single-day sale, grossing just over $4 million and averaging $10,752 for the 372 horses that went through the ring.

Winnerup, from the powerful Burke Racing Stable LLC consignment, was the sale topper at $80,000. Ohio owner/trainer Herman Hagerman signed the ticket for the handsome 5-year-old son of Credit Winner that sports a record of 1:52.1 and earnings of $333,015.

The Burke Racing Stable consignment also included the upper-class pacer East Beach, who went to Bill MacKenzie of New Jersey for $57,000, and the ultra-consistent 3-year-old pacer A Fearsome Hanover, a $50,000 purchase by Bob Cacamese of Maryland. Another top seller from the “Burke Brigade” was Free Thinker, a stakes-winning daughter of Western Vintage with earnings of $80,000 this year. She was hammered down to Roy Murphy of Ohio for $40,000.

Indiana Open trotter Emma Town Bud was purchased by Michael Spaccarelli of New York for $52,000. The handsome 4-year-old son of Big Stick Lindy with earnings of $244,000 was consigned by Summit Pacing Acres.

Broodmares and potential broodmares were in high demand with the young Art Major daughter Member Berry p,2,1:55.2 topping that category on a $50,000 bid from Midwind Farms of Ohio. Emerald Highlands consigned the attractive half-sister to Breeders Crown winner Reflect With Me. Midwind Farms also signed the ticket for Captainandtelly for $36,000, a competitive Captaintreacherous filly from the same consignment.

Spring Haven Farm did a super-human job offering over 80 personal and agent horses at the one-day venue. Known for their quality yearlings and broodmares, the aisles were packed with potential buyers. The consignment was led by the producing Cantab Hall matron Meadowbranch Jill. In foal to Muscle Hill, Marvin Kuhns of Pennsylvania won the bidding war at $42,000. Randy Haines of Cool Winds Farm jumped in the fray and came out the winner on the impressive Somewhere Sweet p,2,1:51.1f ($356,309) in foal to Sweet Lou for $35,000. Next from Spring Haven was a stunning black Andover Hall daughter Hallmark Session, in foal to What The Hill, that was purchased by Vanessa Schockemoehl of Germany for $35,000. Schockemoehl was also the successful bidder on Marion Mardi Gras – a Cantab Hall half-sister to Hambletonian winner Marion Marauder – for $30,000 from the Ruddick Stables consignment.

The sale opened with 100 black-type yearlings eligible to a variety of state-funded programs. First-crop sire Enterprise, by Chapter Seven, was responsible for the top two, with Richard Owings of Ohio signing the ticket for $28,000 on the beautiful filly Royalentertainment from Rose Run Farm and David Ratchford of Nova Scotia winning the bid at $25,000 for the stunning colt Beach Friend, consigned by Dublin Valley Farm.

Also, of note was the especially handsome Stay Hungry colt Dark As Night, consigned by Ruddick Stables and sold to Erv Miller of New Jersey for $22,000, and the Swan For All colt No More Tickets from the Spring Haven Farm consignment. He went to Byron Hooley of Indiana for $21,000.
