Cactus Creek scores in the slop at Monticello

Monticello, NY — After his eye-opening 1:55.3 rout last week in Monticello’s Raceway’s winners over pace, Cactus Creek came right back on Tuesday (April 19) to score a 1:57.2 triumph against similar company on a very muddy racetrack.

Jordan Stratton was again at the controls when the former Adios Pace winner left from the seven hole and once the gate’s wings folded the veteran pacer was gunned to the lead by his tail-setter.

Cactus Creek was a three length winner in 1:57.2.

Once on top Cactus Creek zipped by the quarter in :28.4 and reached the halfway point in :58.2. Still in full gear as he passed the three- quarters in 1:28.3, only the margin of victory was in doubt. At the wire Cactus Creek was a three length winner over Speakin Greek and driver Jimmy Marohn, Jr. Third place went to Jake Of Diamonds, who was in rein to Stephane Bouchard.

“He may have seen his best days but the old guy still has a big motor,” Stratton said about Cactus Creek. “He’s quick, too, and leaves like a runner if you want him to. He’s just a nice horse to drive.”

Cactus Creek is now owned by Reggie Duguay of Winslow, Maine, and is trained by Jamie Gerard. He paid $8.90 for win.

Stratton, who a few years ago at age 21 was the youngest driver ever to win a Monticello Raceway driving title when he piloted 362 winners, usually only competes here one day a week. And he usually makes the most of it when he does.

His victory with Cactus Creek was one of three on the card for Stratton. He also won with Oliver Zong’s Big Puff Doggie ($3.90) in 1:58.3 and with Woody Hoblitzell’s Roan Shark ($23.00) in 2:01.4.
