Calvin B and Discus Hanover take features at Vernon

Vernon, NY – Calvin B (Jimmy Whittemore) and Discus Hanover (Leon Bailey) were winners in the co-features at Vernon Downs on Saturday (July 17).

In the first, Calvin B ($22) made a late charge to get his 50th lifetime win in the $7,000 Open Pace.

Stratosphere (Drew Monti) went to the front and led to the first quarter in :26.2.  He used a :30.1 second quarter to hit the half in :56.3.  Bruce’s Magic (Leon Bailey) made a first-over move and pressured Stratosphere all the way around the final turn.

As they made the turn for home, Stratosphere shook off Bruces Magic.  Calvin B found an opening and popped the pocket in deep stretch.  He got by just before hitting the wire in 1:52.4 to win by a quarter of a length.  Stratosphere held on for second.  Bruce’s Magic finished third best.

Calvin B is an 11-year-old gelding by Bettor’s Delight.  He is owned by Delores Smiel and trained by Jimmy Nickerson.  It was his fourth win of the season.

In the $7,000 Open Trot, Discus Hanover ($5.60) hung on to win by a neck..

Discus Hanover went to the front and led to the first quarter in :27.2.  He used a :31.2 second quarter breather to hit the half in :58.4.  Credit List (Justin Huckabone) made his move first-over from fifth as they headed to the final turn.  Discus Hanover remained in front hitting three-quarters in 1:28.3.

As they made the turn for home, Credit List and Discus Hanover were side-by-side and battled tooth and nail all the way down the stretch.  Discus Hanover dug down deep and won in 1:56.1.  Credit List had to settle for second.  Ulster (Chris Long) finished third.

Discus Hanover is a 4-year-old gelding by Credit Winner.  He is owned by Phillip Hale and trainer David Dewhurst.  That was his sixth win this season.  He now has 22 career victories.

Bailey and Frank Affrunti each drove three winners on the night.  Bailey’s other wins came with Windsong Ingenius ($6.90) and Cache All The Way ($6.80).  Affrunti finished first with Summer Chrome ($4.90), Huntanover ($4.60), and Seel The Deal N ($9.20).
