Cano wins GSY Winter Series First Leg at the Big M

East Rutherford, NJ – After some more snow and cold weather this week, the amateur drivers and pacers kicked off their winter series at the Big M Friday night (Feb. 12).

Even with the below freezing temperatures, the action heated up right from the start with several horses leaving hard for position and the front end.  Preppy Art (John Calabrese) took command to the quarter in :27.3, but was overtaken at the half by Walks of Life (Kelly Hastings).

They went a fast first half mile in 55.1 and this set the race up for the closers to come calling.  That is when the outer flow took shape and Calabrese popped the pocket to take a short lead at the three-quarter pole in 1:25.1.

In the stretch, horses were coming from two, three and even four wide, and when the dust settled, Tailgunner Hanover (Juan Cano) was able to get up in the shadow of the wire to win by a neck.  Niall Hanover (James Foley), who came from last picked up the runner up spot and post time favorite, So So De Vie (Tony Beltrami) rounded out the trifecta.   The mile was timed in 1:55.

The 8-year old gelding is out of the mare Towner’s Image and is sired by Well Said.  He is owned and trained by Adrienne Hall from NJ.

The GSY Series’ second leg in the series is scheduled for next Friday night (Feb. 19).  The first post is at 6 p.m.
