Caviart Heather, Lucy Lightyear win NJSS races at Freehold

Freehold, NJ – Freehold Raceway played host to two divisions of the New Jersey Sire Stakes for 2-year-old pacing fillies on Saturday (September 7). The divisions resulted in one logical result, and one upset.

In the first division, contested as a non-betting exhibition, Caviart Heather (Somebeachsomewhere-Full Picture) won for the second straight week, going the mile in 1:59.1. Like she did last week, she rated well behind early on, then picked up cover nearing the three-quarter point. Turning for home, driver George Brennan angled her to give her clear sailing, and she drew off to a two-length victory. She’s owned by Caviart Farms and trained by Tony Alagna.

Alagna and Brennan looked likely to sweep both divisions, sending out 3-5 favorite Odds on Hollywood for Odds On Racing in the second division. However, Stacy Chiodo, the trainer/driver of Lucy Lightyear (Somebeachsomewhere-My Qp Doll), had other ideas. Chiodo sent her filly right to the lead, carving out sharp fractions (:28.3, :59.2, 1:29.3) while maintaining a solid advantage throughout. Odds on Hollywood never fired, and Lucy Lightyear coasted under the wire for a 2-1/4 length victory in 1:59. The Timothy Tobias Stable-owned filly paid $24.40 to win, $6.40 to place, and $2.40 to show.

Live racing resumes next Friday (September 13) at Freehold with a first post time of 12:30 p.m. EDT.
