Davis wins GSY leg via disqualification at Monticello

Monticello, NY — A field of seven went to the post over a ‘good’ surface on Monday (Jan. 27) in the GSY Series at Monticello Raceway and as is customary for the amateurs, a speed duel ensued.

Joe Lee, driving post time favorite Bettor Reason N, got to the lead but not easily. He had to work to gain the top spot and didn’t get there until after the quarter pole, which went in a fast :28.4 over the half-mile oval. He was able to maintain that lead over pocket sitter Howmacsblackjack, with Bob Davis holding the lines.

Lee was challenged at the half and three-quarter pole and it looked like Philip “Bo” Sowers, aboard All Artist, made the three wide winning move around the far turn but flattened out in the stretch and mustered only a third place finish.

As the field entered the final turn, Lee’s pacer drifted into the two path and Davis was right on his back. As he moved back down to his rail position, Davis’ horse clipped the wheel of Lee, thus the reason for the disqualification. So, although Lee was able to hold onto the lead, he was placed second, and Bob Davis was declared the winner.

He paid $7 to his backers at the windows and the mile was timed in 2:00.2. The 7-year-old gelding is by Articulator and is owned by Bill Reepmeyer LLC and trained by Lisa Zabielski.

The fifth leg of this winter GSY Series will continue at Monticello next Monday (Feb. 3) and the first post is scheduled for 12:25 p.m.
