Fair Roundup: Racing action opens in Honesdale

Tuesday’s (August 11) edition of Fair Roundup features results stories from the Honesdale (PA) Fair and the Kalamazoo (MI) Fair.

Racing action opens in Honesdale

Honesdale, PA — Harness racing returned to the Wayne County Fairgrounds in Honesdale, Pa., as the three-day county fair meet opened with nine races scheduled.

The opening pair of races were Quaker Stakes for 3-year-old trotters. BS Surgin Don, trained by Sue Brickell and driven by Dave Brickell, won the first race in 2:05.3. Owned by Sue and Dean Brickell, BS Surgin Don is a son of Bedford County. The second division was won by Battle Of Whits in 2:13. Owned, trained and driven by Kim Good, Battle Of Whits is a son of Donerail.

Two $6,242 divisions of the PA Sire Stake 2-year-old colt pace were up next, with Roger Hammer taking both divisions with members of his stable. Half Moon Bay, a son of Western Hanover, won his event in 2:05, while Luscious Al, an Arturo colt, was a winner in 2:02.4.

Freshman Quaker trotters were up next in a pair of events, with victories going to Pine Hill Brat and Redoakswillynilly. Pine Hill Brat, a Yankee McCoy filly, won in 2:14.4 for owner/trainer/driver Michelle Albaugh-Young. Redoakswillynilly (Go Get Lost) scored in 2:09.3 for Syl King, Jr., who owns, trains and was at the helm.

A pair of $6,305 PA Sire Stake freshman filly pacing events were carded next, and the first group watched Keystone Kismet go to the winner’s circle for trainer/driver Todd Schadel. The Western Hanover filly paced in 2:07 for owners Schadel and the Estate of George Hempt Trust. The second split was captured by Mac’s Miss America, trained in Honesdale by Clarence Martin, Jr. for owner Mary Martin. The Allamerican Native filly paced in 2:03.4 for driver Mark Gingrich.

The day’s final event was a 3-year-old Quaker Pace, and the winner was DVC Fivoclock, owned and trained by Dave Brickell. Alexander Amos earned the winning drive as the Quentin Hanover filly paced the mile in 2:03.4.

Busy day of racing in Kalamazoo

Kalamazoo, MI — The Kalamazoo County Fair at Kalamazoo, Michigan hosted the state’s Silver Circuit on Tuesday with a 15-race program.

Andrea Lake’s Ciro’s Inspiration (Ciro Ambrosio-Distancebetweenus) opened the day’s racing by equaling the track record for 2-year-old filly trotters with a mile in 2:07.1. David Lake is the trainer-driver of Ciro’s Inspiration. The second division of the 2-year-old filly trot went to Shes A Diva Mar (Keystone Nordic-Halle Mar) in 2:09.1. William and Laurie Marquis are the filly’s owners with Larry Smith being the trainer-driver.

Righty Tighty (Keystone Nordic-Veeba Jeeba) took the first division of the 2-year-old colt trot in 2:11 for trainer-driver Carl Putnam, Jr. Putnam also co-owns the gelding along with Albert Schaub and the Good Luck Stable. Putnam also piloted the winner of the second split, Mr Billy Blue (Barbell Billy-Lucky Choice). Vern Burchett is the owner-trainer of the gelding. Mr Billy Blue toured the Kalamazoo oval in 2:12.1.

Another Casey (Another Mile-Casey’s Corsair) captured the first division of the 2-year-old filly pace in 2:10.4. Kenneth Carlisle pays the bills on the filly with Keith Carlisle doing the training and Peter Otten doing the driving. Carl Putnam, Jr. steered Media Darling (Another Mile-Darling Renee) to victory in the second division with a mile in 2:06.4. Putnam co-owns the filly with Tammy and Kevin Merrell. Carrie Putnam is the trainer of Media Darling.

Smoke Screen (Admirals Galley-Mattarina) took the first division of the 2-year-old colt pace in 2:06.2 with Jeff Sweeney in the bike. Mike Sweeney is the colt’s trainer with Patrick Sweeney, Thomas Dietrich, and David Haylett picking up the expenses. The second division went to Ricky and Carol Brown’s Jaxon Terrific (Cam Terrific-Barbie West) in 2:07. Ricky Brown also does the training with Darrell Wright doing the driving.

Kody Massey guided Ripn Annie (N V Worthy-Chip’s Lady) to victory in the first division of the 3-year-old filly trot with a mile in 2:08.1. Ken Ott is the filly’s owner-trainer. Lockup Jazz (Lockkeeper-Slamjamin Jazz) won the second division in 2:10. Gus Korbakis is the owner-trainer of Lockup Jazz with Carl Putnam, Jr. picking up the winning drive.

Tim Buter’s Determinator P (Terminator P-Rompaway Olympia) won the first division of the 3-year-old colt trot in 2:07.4. Buter is also the gelding’s trainer with Carl Putnam, Jr. doing the driving. The second split went to Walter Ray (Meet Raymond-Playboy Darla) in 2:09.2. Gary Wrenn is the owner-trainer-driver of Walter Ray.

Reatta (Keystone Raider-Ayr Dragon) found the winner’s circle in the first division of the 3-year-old filly pace after a mile in 2:03. Jeff Sweeney drove the filly for trainer Mike Sweeney. Patrick Sweeney, Joseph McCann, and Thomas Dietrich are the owners of Reatta. Grey Day (Admirals Galley-Blanc De Blanc) won the second division in 2:06.3. Art McIlmurray did the driving with Marie St. Charles doing the training. LRL Racing LLC picks up the tabs on Grey Day.

SF Mudslinger (Cam Terrific-Promise K Det) captured the lone division of the 3-year-old colt pace in 2:02.4. Jessica Stevens is the gelding’s owner with Tony Troy doing the training. Kody Massey picked up the winning catch-drive on Tuesday.
