Fair Roundup: Racing begins at Clearfield Fair

Two-year-old trotters were in action as the Pennsylvania Fair Circuit rolled into Clearfield County for the first of four days at the Clearfield Fair.

With The Meadows on a one-week hiatus, horses poured into the fairgrounds, with nine races on the card.

The day opened with the $2,564 Quaker Trot for freshman state-bred or state-owned horses. Candy Is Dandy, trained and driven by Syl King, Jr., scored in 2:16.2. King also owns the Revenue S filly.

In the first division of the PA Sire Stake filly trot, Nine Gold Coins was a winner for owner/trainer Les Wright and driver Fred Uber, Jr. The Luck Of The Gold filly trotted the mile in 2:13.3. In the second division, Cummingsandgoings (SJ’s Caviar) was a winner in 2:10.2, remaining undefeated in his four-race career. Owned by Cliff and Randy Neal, Cummingsandgoings is trained by Cliff Neal and was driven by Randy Neal. The third division was won by Dunn Stable’s Caviar And Kisses, another daughter of SJ’s Caviar. Roger Hammer drove the winner for trainer Boots Dunn. The winning time was 2:08.4. The final group of filly trotters was led across the wire by another Hammer/Dunn entrant, Cantab Lady. The Cantab Hall filly trotted the mile in 2:06.

Ending the day were four splits of the freshman PASS colt trot, with victories earned by Mr McRail (Donerail), Tag The Lady (Tagliabue), Pennyforyourtrotz (Donerail) and KT Justin A Moment (Super Vintage).

Mr McRail, trained and driven by Dave Brickell for owners Jack and Sharon Claypoole, won in 2:06.3. Tag The Lady, owned by Patricia Wollam, Dennis Sheehan, and Charles Zeune, was a 2:05.4 winner for trainer/driver Marty Wollam. Pennyforyourtrotz gave trainer Syl King, Jr. his second win of the day, this time with Ed McNeight, Jr. in the bike. Owned by Joseph Benedetti, Ronald Silletto and King, Pennyforyourtrotz was a winner in 2:08.1. Finally, KT Justin A Moment won for owner/trainer Ken Weaver and driver McNeight in 2:05.4.

Eleven events for freshman fillies are scheduled for Tuesday at Clearfield. Post time is 1 p.m.
