Fair Roundup: Racing concludes in Hughesville

Hughesville, PA — The two-day harness racing meet at the Lycoming County Fairgrounds in Hughesville, Pa., concluded on Thursday (July 23) with 2-year-olds featured on the 14-race card.

The day started with three divisions of the PA Sire Stake 2-year-old filly pace. My Gal Mykenna, trained and driven by Roger Hammer, captured the first event in 2:06.1. Hammer co-owns the Real Artist filly with Nevin Gilbert. Native Costume, an Allamerican Native filly under lease to Scharf, Keller, and Bittle, won the second division in 2:05.3 for trainer/driver Todd Schadel. The final division was won by NF Native Lady, another daughter of Allamerican Native. Owned by the Brush & Briar Stables along with the Rusty Fence Stable, NF Native Lady paced in 2:07.3 for trainer/driver George Heit.

DVC Givemeattitude scored in 2:00.1 for Dave Brickell.

In the first split of the 2-year-old colt pace, DVC Givemeattitude won his fourth straight race, pacing in 2:00.1 for owner/trainer/driver Dave Brickell. The Arturo gelding has now won five of six overall on the season. Brickell returned to win the next division, this time catch-driving Stately’s Revenge for trainer Bob Krenitsky, who co-owns the gelding with his wife, Barbara. Stately’s Revenge, by The Panderosa, scored in 2:02.4. In the final colt pacing split, Roger Hammer won his second of the day, as Vicki Lynn Fair’s Cories Artist (Real Artist) was a 2:06.4 winner. It was the colt’s first career win in his sixth attempt.

Three groups of PA-sired freshman colt trotters were next, with victories earned by Mr McRail (Donerail), Fortissimo (Wonder Dancer) and KT Justin A Moment (Super Vintage). Mr McRail, trained and reined by Brickell for owners Jack and Sharon Claypoole, trotted in 2:14.1 to capture the first division. Fortissimo trotted in 2:10.2 for owner Eileen Lineweaver, trainer Joyce Lineweaver and driver Charlie Flickinger. KT Justin A Moment, who has now won five of six starts on the year, trotted in 2:06.3 for owner/trainer Ken Weaver and driver Ed McNeight, Jr.

Sire Stake action concluded with three groups of frosh trotting fillies. Cummingsandgoings was a winner in the first division, trotting in 2:14.3 for trainer Cliff Neal and driver Randy Neal. The father-and-son co-own the SJ’s Caviar filly, who is now three-for-three in her career. Leola, a Wonder Dancer filly, was a winner in 2:11.4 for owner Ellen Warren, trainer Joyce Lineweaver and driver Charlie Flickinger. The final division was won by Rosey Chick and the Claypoole/Brickell combination in 2:09.4. It was the first career win for the SJ’s Caviar filly.

In 2-year-old Quaker Stake trotting action for PA-sired or PA-owned horses, Candy Is Dandy was a 2:16.3 winner for owner/trainer/driver Syl King, Jr. The Revenue S filly was making her career debut.

The 2-year-old Quaker Pace ended the day, and the photo finish camera could not separate Camerosa (The Panderosa) and Keystone Radience (Allamerican Ingot). 16-year-old Brady Brown earned his first career driving win behind Camerosa, a filly owned by Virginia and Kathy Schoeffel and trained by Steve Schoeffel. JR Brewer trains and drove Keystone Radience, a filly he co-owns with his father, Jim Brewer, Jr., and his grandfather, Jim Brewer, Sr.

The PA Fair Circuit now moves east to Honesdale in Wayne County for two days of Sire Stake racing on the weekend.
