Frank Milby wraps up driving championship at Rosecroft

Ft. Washington, MD — Frank Milby wrapped up the 2019 dash driving championship at Rosecroft Raceway with four wins on the Wednesday night (May 15) card.

Milby picked up the drive on Puddin N Pie ($3.60) Wednesday night and the 5-year-old Yankee Glide gelding continued his solid 2019 season with his third win of year for owner-trainer Howard Birney. His ledger for the year stands at 12-3-2-4.

Sherman’s Way ($6.00) won in wire-to-wire fashion, stopping the timer in 2:01.3. It was the first win of the year for trainer Chris Offutt and Michael Offutt.

Explosive Drama ($10.80) made his first start in the Jason Walters barn and brushed three-wide for Milby down the backside to win in 1:59.1 for new owner Joseph Plummer.

Milby’s final win came aboard Lil Miss Gorgeous ($9.80) who split rivals late to win in 1:53.2 for owner William Cantrell and trainer John Cabot.

Eddie Davis Jr., picked up three wins on the night. His first came with Mittany Nicole ($8.00) for owner-trainer Brian Callahan. Davis left aggressively from post nine on the far outside and found a hole third. As the favorite Dionne faltered in a first over bid, it left room for the eventual winner to escape the pylons and beat Adele Hanover by a length in a lifetime best 1:55.3.

Davis came back and won the next race with Bubbler Hanover ($10.40) who spent his 2-year old campaign in the Dave Menary barn. Now owned and trained by Trevor Stafford, the son of Breeders Crown champion mare Burning Point won his second start for his new connection in 1:54.4, coming first up and eventually drawing off by four lengths.

The biggest splash of the night for Davis came with Doyouseewhatisee in the finale. The daughter of We Will See eventually got past a stubborn Coffee’s Ready in 1:54.3, returning $43.00 for her backers. Morte Bedford IV trains and co-owns the mare with Faithful Stables.

A big week for Declan Donoway continued as he backed up Sunday night’s driving triple with two more wins. The 19-year-old provisional driver has gotten along well with Hickory Pandle ($18.40) this year and the two took the $12,500 Maryland Open handicap for mares in 1:53.3. It was a new lifetime mark for the daughter of The Panderosa for owner-trainer Richard Malone Jr.

Donoway scored with A Lady Sizzling ($4.40) for Green Valley Training and trainer Thomas Armour in 1:54.4. It ran Donoway’s win total to 11 on the spring meet.

One of the night’s highlights was an exhibition race featuring TVG hosts Dave Weaver and Todd Schrupp won by Weaver. Each host called a race as well.

Saturday night is closing night for the spring meet, highlighted by four $70,000 Maryland Sires Stakes finals for 3-year-old pacers and trotters. Two of the fastest 3-year-old trotters in the country this year, Fire N Woodshed and HS Judy Jetson, are scheduled to race on the card with a 7 p.m. post time. The 50-cent Pick-5, with an industry low 12 percent takeout, has a $1,400 carryover as well.
