Gerald Teis, 73, dies

Columbus, OH — Gerald Edwin Teis, 73, died Oct. 14, 2020, at West Penn Hospital in Pittsburgh. He died peacefully with his wife, Jill, by his side and surrounded by his children and grandchildren.

Mr. Teis was a former Standardbred trainer and owner and raced at Yonkers, Roosevelt, The Meadowlands and Freehold in the 1970s and ’80s.

He trained horses for Bert James, Charlie Keller, Art and Tim Rooney and John Tozzi, to name a few of his owners. He also worked for Billy Haughton, Stanley Dancer and Harry Harvey.

Bert James’ Saucy Wave was one of the most successful horses he trained as she raced on the Grand Circuit. His favorite New York Sires Stake horse and Can Am winner was Armbro Sonny.

A memorial service is being held in New Jersey on Oct. 25 at Open Door Bible Church in Howell, N.J.
