Harmon takes down GSY series at The Meadowlands

East Rutherford, NJ — It was a perfect night for racing with beautiful mid 70-degree temperatures for the first day of summer at the Meadowlands.

When the gates opened for the first race on the card, more than half of the 9 horse field left the gate, wanting to get to the lead.  Things sorted out after a fast 27.1 first stanza, and that is where Serious Major found himself on top with Tyler Miller doing the driving.  He was challenged by a newcomer to the series in Marianna Monaco, aboard Carters Caper, who was stuck on the outside, trying desperately to get to the front.  The swift :55 half helped the outer tier flow and horses from the back of the pack make their moves as the field turned for home.

Horses were coming from everywhere as the field entered the stretch.  That is when Roy Marohn, aboard Dull Roar, made a three-wide bid for the top spot that was quickly taken over by Big Jer and Rob Harmon, who was following right behind him on the outside.  Harmon cleared Marohn in the stretch and had to stave off a late serious bid by Matt Zuccarello, driving Good Day Mate for the first time.   He was able to do so by a head as Zuccarello came up short and Marohn held onto the show dough.  The mile went in 1:53.   This 10-year-old gelding out of Cheyenne Rei is owned by Patricia Mulder and trained by Patti Harmon.

The GSY will be back next week for its regular weekly event that will go for a purse of $11,000.  The first race post is slated for 7:15 p.m.
