Harmon wins GSY Series at big odds

Monticello, NY — Seven pacers went to post in the first race on Thursday’s card (July 20) at Monticello in the third leg of the GSY series.

GSY President Dave Yarock, driving Sammy B Happy went for the lead from the rail and carved out a torrid first quarter of 27.2 over the half-mile oval.  He maintained that lead into the stretch, but that is when the closers came knocking and Awesum Ace, driven by Rob Harmon, was able to collar the long-time leader en route to a 1-1/2 length victory.

Yarock was able to hold onto second and another closer and post-time favorite, CC Big Boy Sam, with Monica Banca in the sulky, could only manage third.   The betting public sent Harmon off at 17-1 odds and paid a handsome $37.60 for every $2 win bet.

The mile was timed in 1:58 flat over the upstate NY oval.  This 5-year-old gelding out of United Ace is owned by Adam Friedland and trained by Daniel Gill.

The GSY will be back next week at Monticello on Thursday as the final leg before the finals take place.  The first post is slated for 12:55 p.m.
