Hennessey scores 11,000th career win

Nichols, NY — Fresh off of a seven-win night at Tioga Downs on Friday (Sept. 17), Wally Hennessey scored his 11,000th career driving win aboard Marquis Volo on Saturday (Sept. 18).

One of four victories on the night, Wally Hennessey guided Agedchedar Hanover home on Saturday evening. Fred Brown Photo.

A native of Charlottetown, PEI, Hennessey, was parked to the first quarter with Marquis Volo, by ER Sophia (Michael Merton), heading into the first turn. When the field went into the clubhouse turn Hennessey asked his Credit Winner gelding to accelerate, and he got a good response, clearing before the half of :58.3.

From that point, Hennessey was on cruise control as he maintained the lead to win by 1-1/4 lengths in 1:56. Marquis Volo earned his sixth victory of the year and now has $32,729 in the bank for owners James McDonald, Jacalyn Boddie, and Dan Boddie.

Hennessey has amassed over $72.5 million throughout his storied career, which included many stakes victories, including an Elitlopp victory aboard the great Moni Maker. Hennessey would end the evening with 11,003 wins, scoring victories aboard Scootnroll, Spirit Shadow, and Agedchedar Hanover.

Hennessey told John Berry in 2019, following his 10,000th career victory, “I have been around for many years and am lucky to have stayed competitive all these years. It certainly doesn’t get any easier with the talent around these days, but that’s why it’s necessary to work harder than ever to retain your sharpness.”

Racing returns to Tioga Downs for their closing weekend on Saturday (Sept. 24) with the first post of 6:15 p.m.
