High School Harness Racing Challenge Monday in Circleville

Circleville, OH — The second annual High School Harness Racing Challenge will be contested on Monday (June 17) at the Pickaway County (Ohio) Fair, the last day of the county fair race meet in Circleville. This year, each high school will be represented by its head football coach.

The schools will be competing for a portion of the $1,000 purse donated by the Senior Fair Board. Participating schools will earn $200 and the winner of the exhibition race will earn $400. Each coach will be paired with a professional harness driver in a double-seated jog cart. The race horses are being provided by local trainer Jim Arledge Jr.

Circleville High School fans will see new head football coach Luke Katris in action against Teays Valley football coach Mark Weber, Logan Elm football coach Terry Holbert, and Westfall High School’s coach Brad Smith.

Last year’s inaugural event was a big success, with the participants expressing great enthusiasm for the experience and appreciation for the competitiveness of the drivers.

The High School Racing Challenge exhibition race is part of a solid race program. Once again this year, the marquee race of the evening will be the Steamin Demon Pace, named after the world champion double-gaited horse born and trained in Circleville. This race brings high-quality older pacers to the fairgrounds and continues to grow in prestige and purse value. This year’s field will be competing for a purse of $8,500.

Horsemen and fans alike are encouraged to participate in a food drive to be held during the races Monday by bringing at least one canned food item for donation.

Post time for Monday’s races is 5 p.m. Grandstand admission is free with fairgrounds admission price. Pari-mutuel wagering will be available.
