Indianapolis, IN – With the recent announcement of the Breeders Crown returning to Harrah’s Hoosier Park in 2020, the Indiana Standardbred Breed Development Program is encouraging stallion owners and breeders of Indiana-sired foals to remember the nomination deadline set for May 15.
“During the 2017 Breeders Crown, we had 10 Indiana-sired horses race in the eliminations and move onto the finals, which was huge for any state breeding program,” said Jessica Barnes, Director of Racing and Breed Development for the Indiana Horse Racing Commission. “Add in the three champions in 2017 and one in 2018, it’s a streak I would like to see continue in the coming years.”
Barnes also points out that it’s vital for breeder promotions to have their stallions nominated, especially with the event returning to the Hoosier State in 2020. “What better way to advertise your program?” she asked.
In order for a foal to be eligible for the Breeders Crown championship races, stallions must be nominated with the Hambletonian Society during the year the breeding occurred.
The following number of Indiana stallions have been nominated each year:
• 2017 breeding season/foals of 2018 – 16*
• 2018 breeding season/foals of 2019 – 19
• 2019 breeding season/foals of 2020 – 19
(*Breeders Crown #34)
Foals of 2018 will be debuting in 2020, working towards their own starts at the Anderson, IN track. If you have a yearling who is by a Breeders Crown nominated stallion, the yearling payment must be postmarked by May 15 in order for that foal to maintain eligibility for the Breeders Crown. The first payment due for yearlings is $150. Stallions staked for the 2017 breeding season (Breeders Crown #34) can be found online at https://www.hambletonian.com/breeders-crown-stallion-nominations.html.
Breeders are also reminded that both nominating and sustaining payments for Grand Circuit events at the Indiana State Fair, to be raced August 7, are also due on May 15.
Sustaining payments for 2-Year-Olds include payments for the Fox Stake No. 93, Hoosier Stake No. 83 and Ralph Wilfong No. 82. For yearlings these events include historic stakes races like the Fox Stake No. 94, Horseman Stake No. 112, Hoosier Stake No. 84 and the Ralph Wilfong Stake No. 83. These races do not require the stallion to be nominated. Payment forms for these races can be found online at https://www.hambletonian.com/payment-forms.html.
