Horses to return to Elkhorn, Wisconsin

by Rick Tittsler

Elkhorn, WI — The Walworth County Fairgrounds in Elkhorn, Wisconsin welcomes back harness racing this Sunday, July 12, at noon.

This is the second race meet at the track in 2009, and promises some friendly “grudge matches” following the June 20 meet. More 2- and 3-year olds are also coming out as the season progresses.

Elkhorn is located just 45 minutes southwest of Milwaukee along I-43. Travel time from Madison is just 80 minutes, and the track is only 1 hour and 40 minutes from Maywood Park near Chicago.

“This is probably my favorite of all the Wisconsin tracks,” says Janice Simmons, a Mequon, Wisconsin resident who recently completed the USTA Driving School. “There is so much harness racing history here, you can feel it. The train used to pull into Elkhorn during its Grand Circuit days, and the grooms would walk the horses from the station right to the fairgrounds.”

Parking and admission are free, food and drinks are available, and a 50-50 cash raffle is planned. The Wisconsin Harness Horse Association and Elkhorn Trotting Club welcome everyone “Back to the Track!”
