Humboldt hosts Iowa Sires Stakes

Humboldt, IA — The third installment of Iowa Sires Stakes were held on Saturday (Aug. 24) at the Humboldt County Fairgrounds in Humboldt, Iowa. The 15- race card featured 2- and 3-year-old trotters and pacers.

Both divisions of 2-year-old filly pacers finished in 2:05 on the Humboldt half. Rob Anderson cut the mile in race one with Jennie Ann, a daughter of Lettherockbegin, making this her third win in a row, six wins this season. Ivy B Poison, driven by Scott Smith, set the pace in race three. With a last quarter in :30.3, the Sneaky B Skipalong filly took a new lifetime mark with her fifth win.

Colts sired by Millionaire Cam stepped up to win both divisions of 2-year-old pacing colts and geldings. The fastest division went to Slippin The Clutch in race five. Driver Will Roland set the cruise control, going wire-to-wire. As Slippin the Clutch won his sixth race, he set a new lifetime mark of 2:02.4. Almostamillionaire, also driven by Will Roland, took race seven in 2:05.2, the colt’s second win.

Races four and six featured 2-year-old trotting colts and geldings. DP Country Boy picked up his first win for trainer/driver John Saner. The All In Tad colt battled Midwest Ranger (Aaron Mitchell) the entire mile. DP Country Boy made his way to the winner’s circle in race four, trotting to the win in 2:10, last quarter in :32. Trainer Rick Huffman took the lines to drive Scoreoneforme to victory in race six. The 2-year-old son of Man Of Broadway cut the fractions, trotting to the win in 2:08.2 by 22 lengths.

Two-year-old trotting fillies competed in race two. When the gate folded, SV Tellmeimyours (Adam Hauser) trotted to the top. Battle Queen sat second until the half. When driver Gary Liles pulled the Yadi-sired filly, she didn’t look back. Battle Queen opened up on the field, winning by more than 30 lengths. With eight wins on the season, this makes her fourth win in a row for owner/trainer/driver Gary Liles.

Race eight belonged to 3-year-old trotting fillies. DP Rocket, by All In Tad, won gate-to-wire. Cutting the fractions in :29.1, 1:00, and 1:30.3, Adam Hauser drove his filly home in 2:01.2, last quarter :30.4, her fourth win.

Three-year-old trotting colts and geldings were featured in races 10 and 12. Gary Liles picked up another win on the card, driving Cracker Box to victory in 2:07, second win in a row for the Honeydont Hanover gelding. In race 12, it was all Depth Charge. As the starters left the gate, Sly Rascal (Cory Larson) sprinted to the lead. Ricky Be Sharp (Lorenza Gooch), not satisfied sitting second, took the lead at the quarter. Sitting third, Liles and Depth Charge stalked the leaders and pulled to take the pocket trip. When the trotting colts turned for home, Depth Charge took the rail advantage as Ricky Be Sharp drifted out. Crossing the wire with a half-length lead, the Motorcade gelding gained his first win of the season with a new lifetime mark of 2:05.3, picking up a driving triple for Liles.

Iowa-sired 3-year-old pacing colts and geldings competed in one division in race 11. With multiple lead changes throughout the race, Bad Boy Destroyer (Chad Svendson) stuck his head in front, in 2:05.4, first win in 2019 for the Relentless Yankee gelding.

Nat A Cam (Rob Anderson) paced the fastest division of 3-year-old pacing fillies, winning race nine in 2:01. With back to back wins, this makes the sixth win for the Millionaire Cam filly this season. Heavy Handed Hanna (Will Roland) gained her fourth win this year in race 13. Also by Millionaire Cam, she paced wire-to-wire in 2:04.2, last quarter in :29.4.

A pair off first lifetime wins finished the card in two non-winners races. Broadway Sweetheart, with driver/trainer/owner Jim Reese in the bike, took race 14. The 2-year-old Broadway Or Bust trotting filly led the field to the win in 2:12.3. Saner Stable finished one-two in race 15. Smarty Tart Gonspi (Jason Telfer), a 3-year-old trotting filly by Amigo Ranger, crossed the wire, finishing in 2:12.4, with stablemate Bonneville Burt trotting second.

Racing continues at What Cheer, with a two-day card featuring Iowa-Registered horses. Races will be held at the Keokuk County Fairgrounds on Saturday (Aug. 31) and Sunday (Sept. 1). Post time for both days is 12:30 p.m. (CDT).
