Loaded wheel barrow raffle will benefit senior Standardbreds

Salisbury, MD — Horse Lovers United Inc. is paying expenses on several retired Standardbreds. Many were returned to HLU when they became unable to be ridden any more by adopters, because that is the HLU policy.

Many adopters are kind enough to keep the horses for their lifetime, but some do not. The oldest are Sting Like A B at 33, Von’s Charmer at 31, Rising Ty at 29, Smarty’s Alec at 25 and Exotics Photostar at 24.

There are a few who suffered injuries in racing and although they would be good pleasure horses now, nobody is interested in adopting them. They include Armbro Dunbar, Elijah Hanover, and Incoming Storm.

There are a dozen altogether and their expenses are close to $2,000 per month. HLU does not have a farm, so all these Standardbreds are boarded at private farms.

Anna Hughes Piccolo of Anna Piccolo designs put a fund-raiser together to benefit these retired Standardbreds. A loaded wheel barrow is being raffled to raise funds. It is loaded with horse items carefully selected to appeal to any horse person. The tickets are $5 each or five for $20. Tickets are available by mail. Send a check to: Horse Lovers United Inc., P. O. Box 2744, Salisbury, MD, 21802.

The drawing will be held during live racing on Monday night (Sept. 16), which is Quillen Night, at Harrington Raceway.

There will also be several consolation prizes. It will be the responsibility of the winners to pick up their prize and only one prize per person.
