Luckycompeter finally scores in Rosecroft Open

Ft. Washington, MD — Since coming to Rosecroft last fall, trotter Luckycompeter has made 20 starts. All but two have come in the Open Handicap or Maryland Trotting Derby as has he has slugged it out against the best Rosecroft has to offer. The problem for the 5-year old son of Uncle Peter is, before Wednesday night (April 7) he was 0-17 in that class with eight second place, and two third place finishes. In fact in 20 starts at Rosecroft he’s missed only one check.

Driver Jason Thompson has been with him in his last 13 starts, and Wednesday night they finally got to the Open Handicap winner’s circle, as Thompson parlayed a perfect pocket trip behind Judge Bob to get home in a new lifetime best 1:55.1. Ironically, he was the favorite and returned $6.60 to win.

So far this year, the pair have been first or second in six of nine starts. His versatile early speed has put him in the top three in 32 of his 50 lifetime starts. Shaun Callahan trains the winner for Stuart Chambers Racing, BCJM Inc., and Cinbrew Enterprises.

It was one of three wins for Thompson on the card as he hustled home with Gittin All Sexy ($9.40) and Adios Man ($7.00).

In the $11,000 Open Handicap for pacing mares, Eddie Davis Jr went coast-to-coast with the favorite Skateboard Chic ($7.80) for Bart Bradley in 1:52.1. It was the third win of the year for the daughter of Quik Pulse Mindale, bred in Maryland by Winbak Farm. She already has exceed her 2020 earnings now with $42,618.

Russell Foster won four races for the second straight card, giving him 44 atop the Rosecroft driving standings. Former Rosecroft driving champion Jim Morand made an appearance and guided two Les Givens trainees to victory. John Wagner and Brittany Bounds each had training doubles as well.
