Maryland State Fair-All Standardbred Show on Aug. 31

from the Cloverleaf Standardbred Owners Association, Inc.

Temple Hills, MD — The second annual All Standardbred Show at the Maryland State Fair will be held Aug. 31.

In 2014, riders and their Standardbreds from around the Mid-Atlantic area attended our inaugural show. We are hoping to make 2015 another success and we’ve added Barrel Racing and Pole Bending to the lineup of classes. For a complete listing of classes click here.

This year’s show will have representation of horses that are available for adoption. Teresa Willabus, President of In Stride is fostering two Standardbreds from the Standardbred Retirement Foundation that will be competing in the show and are available for adoption.

In Stride is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization, whose mission is to promote the versatility and ulterior utilization of the Standardbred horse, working within the local tri-state area in conjunction with the Standardbred Retirement Foundation, a non-profit, tax exempt organization created to care for, rehabilitate, and secure lifetime adoption of non-competitive racehorses, to ensure their proper care with follow-up, and combine the needs of youth at risk with these horses in therapeutic equine programs to benefit both.

Bella Americana, a graduate of Starting Gaits Standardbred Transition Program, Inc., who is competing in Ohio’s 4-H events at the state level, will also be competing at this year’s show.

Starting Gaits Standardbred Transition Program, Inc. is dedicated to promoting and facilitating alternative career options for the Standardbred breed once their racing career has ended. Starting Gaits’ programs aim to educate and increase awareness of the versatility of the breed through events and activities, facilitate off-site placement assistance, and provide transitional training and placement services to approved homes to ensure the lifelong care of the horse.

This show is open to all states. There are enough stalls to stable more than 100 horses.

Prize money has been donated by the Maryland State Fair, Cloverleaf Standardbred Owners Association and Maryland Standardbred Breeders Association.

Entries are due by July 31; you can visit http://fairs.centergy.com/maafs for the online entries system.

This show and other equine shows are just one of the initiatives the Maryland horse industry have planned at this year’s Maryland State Fair which include My Maryland Horseland and My Maryland Horse Festival.

My Maryland Horseland will be located next to Kiddieland and the grandstand and will be open the entire 12 days of the fair. A variety of hands on activities and breeds will be represented, all focusing on horses. Standardbreds will be one of the featured breeds inside My Maryland Horseland and will feature an overview on how to get into a race bike and harnessing a horse for a race.

My Maryland Horse Festival will be a two day event held Sept. 1 and 2, held within the infield of the state fair’s Thoroughbred racetrack.
