Mia Davis wins 2020 HHI Jerome L. Hauck Scholarship

Burlington, NJ — Mia Davis has been awarded the 2020 Harness Horsemen International $4,000 Jerome L. Hauck Scholarship.

Davis, daughter of Standardbred trainer Martin Davis and Amy Davis, a clinical laboratory scientist, plans on attending the University of Delaware this fall to pursue a degree in Equine Science with plans to continue on to Veterinary Science. She is a granddaughter of famed trainer-driver Eddie Davis.

“Mia is an exceptional young lady; she is both an outstanding student and accomplished athlete and is very active in her community,” noted Sal DiMario, Delaware Standardbred Owners Association Executive Director. “She comes from one of Delaware’s most prominent harness racing families and the local harness racing community is proud to call her one of their own. I am certain that Mia will make HHI equally proud in her future academic pursuits.”

Davis is a member of Smyrna High School’s state championship softball team; class secretary; president of the Smryna Youth Leadership Organization; president of the Smyrna High School Future Health Care Professionals; member of the National Honor Society & FFA; and a member of the Youth Philanthropy Board of the Delaware Community Foundation.

She also volunteers for the Startt Me Up racing stable and the Animal Inn, a boarding and daycare center for animals in Dover.

As well, she has been the recipient of the Mary Jo Jenner Award, Smyrna High School’s Marking Period Hall of Fame and Smyrna High School’s Spirit Award.

“Mia not only excels academically as an honors student but gives 100 percent in every aspect of her life,” wrote trainer Jim King Jr. on her behalf. “She is a devoted animal lover and has enjoyed working with her family’s harness horses and has also cared for small animals. With her passion for animals she is aspiring to be a veterinarian and would make a great one!”

“All my life I remember being at the family horse farm,” Davis said. “I love helping at the farm and will continue to do so throughout my life. I am hoping to gain the best education I can at the University of Delaware so I can get into vet school. I would like to become a large animal veterinarian specializing in equine medicine.”

Harness Horsemen International is delighted to present the Jerome L. Hauck Scholarship to such a deserving candidate as Mia Davis.
