PA fair racing held at two venues

by Jeff Zidek

Harness racing on the Pennsylvania County Fair Racing Circuit split on Tuesday, August 7, with racing action taking place simultaneously in two corners of the state.

In the southwestern corner, Waynesburg (Greene County) hosted five Pennsylvania Sires Stake events and a pair of overnight events.

The day’s richest race was the 2-year-old colt trot, which carried a purse of $4,278. Pine Hill Prince continued his domination over the frosh trotting ranks, scoring in 2:11.4 for driver Steve Schoeffel. Margaret and Zachary Johnston own the Yankee Escapade colt, who is trained by Scott Johnston.

In the $4,163 2-year-old filly trot, DNJ’s Merry Dancer picked up the win, scoring in 2:14.1 for trainer Eileen Lineweaver and driver Winston Lineweaver. A daughter of Wonder Dancer, DNJ’s Merry Dancer is owned by Ellen Warren and Doris Copp.

In the $3,859 3-year-old colt pace, Future Art recorded the day’s fastest win time, winning in 2:00.2 for Lineweaver and trainer Joe Offutt. A gelded son of Arturo, Future Art is owned by Offutt and Marshall Herrin.

The day’s other Sire Stake event, the 3-year-old filly pace, split into two divisions, won by Clear Character (Shady Character) and She’s So (Dragon’s Lair).

Clear Character, owned by Tony Lisi along with trainer Chris Oluvic, won in 2:01.4 for driver Eddie McNeight, while She’s So won in 2:03.2 for owners Wayne Shaffer and Ken Weaver. Weaver trains She’s So, and McNeight was in the bike.

McNeight and Weaver also teamed to win an overnight trot with KT Brat in 2:10.2, while Lineweaver’s third win of the day set an all-time track record, as Upfront Get R Dun, a Donerail 4-year-old, won in 2:02, the fastest trotting race ever at the Greene County oval. Weaver trains the new track record holder for owner Trish Adams. Upfront Get R Dun’s record erased a 2:02.1 record originally set 24 years ago by Roger Hammer and Moore Hanover.

Meanwhile, in the northeastern corner of the Commonwealth, the Wayne County Fair (Honesdale, Pa.) opened its three-day meet. Ironically, the entry box looked the same as in Waynesburg, leading to five stake races and two overnights on the card.

Tagador (Tagliabue) captured the $4,228 freshman colt trot for state breds, winning in 2:11.1 for owner Leon Kauffman, trainer Syl King and driver Tony Schadel.

In the 2-year-old filly trot, worth $4,213, RT Barbwire was the winner for trainer Robert Rougeaux and driver Dave Brickell. The Ebanks filly, owned by Harold Brocious, won in 2:09.2.

The Quaker Stake for 2-year-old pacers brought an interesting result, as SB Quents Knight (Brickell), who has been winning regularly this year, lost to stablemate DVC Elegant Beauty, another Quentin Hanover offspring. Owner/trainer Brickell turned the lines over to driver Alexander Amos for the 2:04.1 win.

Brickell returned to the winner’s circle in the $3,964 sophomore filly trot PASS event, as JC Mik Mac Jillio (Bedford County) won in 2:06.1, and he closed out the day by winning the Quaker 3-year-old pace with DVC Dixie Cocktail (Western Hero) in 2:04.

The overnight pacing events were won by Miss April (Jim Martin) in straight heats, 2:06 and 2:05.3.

Racing continues at both venues on Wednesday.
