Rookies contest second round of Maryland Sire Stakes

Berlin, MD — The second round of Maryland Sire Stakes preliminaries for 2-year-olds took place on Friday (Sept. 11) at Ocean Downs, with two splits for pacing fillies and one for trotting colts and geldings.

In the first division for pacing fillies, owner-driver Russell Foster angled Wowie Zowie (Cam’s Rocket) out from third up the backside, and the pair ground their way up to catch the leader Madisonsallin (Rusty’s All In) in the stretch and stop the clock in 1:58.1. Megan Foster trains the winner; Michael Hans is the breeder.

SJs Special Kay (Russell Hanover) and Jim Morand fired out of post four to control all the fractions in the second split for pacing fillies, and finished two lengths ahead of the late-closing Kelsys For Real in 1:59.2. This win gave trainer Les Givens and owners Nanticoke Racing LLC, James Magno and Joe Fonte their second stakes win for the night.

Those same connections also scored in the lone division for trotting colts and geldings. Funnyfunnyriddle (Lockkeeper) picked up his third straight wire-to-wire win, finishing three lengths ahead of a late closing Trent’s A Lock (Lockkeeper) in 2:04.4 with Givens driving.
