Scioto Downs caps Memorial Day weekend with more than $3.3 million wagered

Columbus, OH — Eldorado Scioto Downs held a special Memorial Day card on Monday (May 25) with a 6:30 p.m. post. For this, the third racing day for the 2020 season, Scioto handled more than $1 million on the card.

“Historically we’ve had an afternoon post time on holidays,” said race secretary Jason Roth. “However Joe (Morris, Senior Vice President of Racing for Eldorado Resorts), Gabe Prewitt and I were looking at the schedule and thought there would be less competition for an evening card.”

The Friday night (May 22) 12-race opening card had $1.054 million wagered; Saturday night’s card, also with 12 races, handled $1.12 million while Monday’s 14-race card handled $1.195 million.

“We’re pleased with how the opening weekend was received,” stated Morris. “Our staff worked diligently to host five straight days of qualifiers before this three-day opening weekend. Much of our staff is not back yet because the casino isn’t open yet.”

Weekend racing highlights include a close finish in the $18,000 Fillies & Mares Open on Friday, with Rosemary Rose winning by a nose over Sally Fletcher A in 1:51.2. Rosemary Rose, a 6-year-old by Foreclosure N, was driven by Chris Page for trainer Ron Burke.

The Saturday horses and geldings open went to My Hero Ron, pacing the mile in 1:50 for driver Aaron Merriman and trainer Danny Dubeansky.

Monday’s card had four divisions of the non-winners of one for trotters, with the first division being the fastest in 1:55.3. Tootie won by a head over A Fancy Face for driver Brett Miller. The 3-year-old daughter of Uncle Peter is trained by Pamela Young for Big Dog Racing.

Racing at Scioto Downs will continue this week Wednesday through Saturday with a 6:30 p.m. first post. The cards for Wednesday and Thursday have been drawn and there are 14 races carded for each evening.

With the great response on the guaranteed wagers through the USTA’s Strategic Wagering Program for the first three cards, Scioto will have a guaranteed $15,000 pool for the Pick-5 on both the Wednesday and Thursday cards; the Pick-5 has a low 14 percent takeout.
