Scioto Downs tops $1 million handle for fourth consecutive night

Columbus, OH — Eldorado Scioto Downs posted its fourth consecutive $1 million handle night on Wednesday (May 27). There were 14 races on the card, half of which were for various divisions of non-winners of one.

Trainer Ryan Miller won two of those races. The 32-year-old from Greenville, Ohio has just over 800 training starts since going out on his own full-time in 2015, with 128 wins and more than $1.4 million in earnings. Prior to moving back to Ohio to train, Miller was based in Goshen, N.Y., working for trainer Ray Schnittker for six years.

The first division won by the trainer was a fillies and mares pace, taken by Hoochie Girl and driver Kayne Kauffman in 1:54. By Mister Big out of the McArdle mare Silverhill Princes, the Ohio-bred filly is owned by Miller’s Miller Racing Stable, Chris Gilbert, Chad Howell and Janie Hartley. As a 2-year-old, Hoochie Girl had eight starts and just over $48,000 in earnings.

The second winner of the evening for Miller was Rockemsockem Scott, a 3-year-old by Rockin Amadeus. The gelding was driven to victory by Cameron McCown for owners Miller, Janie Hartley and Lynn Miller. With seven starts and only $4,704 earned last year, Rockemsockem Scott has started off sharply in 2020 with the win in 1:53.

Miller had a third winner on the night, in the fillies and mares non-winners of two pace, with Keystone Eureka. Winning in 1:54, the daughter of Somebeachsomewhere was driven by Trace Tetrick. At two, Keystone Eureka earned $63,095 in nine starts for owner Miller.

“It’s nice, especially since I own a piece of all my horses,” said Miller about getting back racing. “It takes a toll on you financially when you own a bunch of them. We had a good group of 3-year-olds training down and it’s nice to start them off sharp.”

Racing continues at Scioto Downs on Thursday (May 28). Once again there is a Pick-5, with a low 14 percent takeout, guaranteed at $15,000. First post is at 6:30 p.m. Free expanded program pages are available for the Pick-5 at handicapping.ustrotting.com. Program pages for the entire evening’s card are available on this Scioto Downs webpage.
