Signature Series chase tightens up

by Dave Schmidt, executive director, the Signature Series

Richwood, OH — 2005 will go down as one of the most competitive Signature Series since its start six years ago. Heading into Upper Sandusky next week, tight battles for the Pace and Trot Championships will be on the line.

The Richwood Independent Fair produced some exciting action on Labor Day. In the Farrington Pace first division, newcomer Always Royal, driven by Ron Steck, came home for the win in 1:58.4, outlasting Gigabite Bluegrass and Single Bubba. Rock Sensation came in fifth and now trails the leaders in the Pace by two points.

The second division had Camcoder, driven by Jimmy Shelton, take the win with a time of 1:58.3. With the win Camcoder tied Tattler’s Jet for the Signature Series Pace lead. Tattler’s Jet was scheduled to be in this division but was a scratch for the race.

The Cheney-Krebehenne Trot also had two divisions on the holiday afternoon. In the first division Ultimate Message, driven by David Repine in 2:00.4, took the win and nipped three-time SS Trot Champ One Final Time, who was also clocked in the same time. The second place showing helped One Final Time to stay close for a fourth title by trailing Series leader Sugar Free by only two points. That’s George, who finished third, is also still in the hunt for the title, trailing by only four points.

In the second division, Tom Bruce, driven by Jeff Bolyard, came home in 2:03.1 to nip Series leader Sugar Free, who was also clocked in the same time.

The Series now moves to the Wyandot County Fair in Upper Sandusky. Look for a big turnout by the leaders for this event. It looks like the titles will have to be won on Jug Day at Delaware.
