Slendorn and Anderson win GSY Series races at The Meadowlands

East Rutherford, NJ — This week once again brought two GSY Series amateur races to The Meadowlands card on Friday night (June 11) in the third and fifth races.

The last leg before the final featured nine pacers and amateur drivers going to post in race three and when the gate opened in the first division a few left for position but after a :27 first quarter, Jerrytone (John Calabrese) found himself on a loose lead but that wasn’t for long. That’s because Montefalco N (James Slendorn) made a bold brush down the backstretch and was able to clear to the lead just after the half-mile point in :55.

He was able to sustain his momentum and stave off all challengers en route to a half-length victory over the post time favorite, Whatstroublnurocky (James Foley). Calabrese and Jerrytone hung on to the show dough. The mile went in a fast 1:51.2.

The winner, a 6-year-old gelding out of the mare Bellagio Lover, sired by Shadow Play, is owned by Slendorn and trainer Kelvin Harrison.

The fifth race on the card featured nine trotters going to post and as the gates opened a few left for the lead, as was the case last week, and in the pace earlier on the card. As the field approached the quarter in :27.2, Grey (Joe Pennacchio) reluctantly gave up the lead to Innisfallen (Jacob Stillwell). He was able to hold his position on the lead until the field hit the stretch and looked like he was going to hold off the closers on the outside.

As he was fending off Southwind Frost (Robert Hechkoff), a patient Dawn Anderson, behind Take A Wish, snuck up the pylons and went on to victory in 1:55.2. They won by a length over Innisfallen and Stillwell and Southwind Frost and Hechkoff rounded out the trifecta.

The winner, a 6-year-old mare out of Take A Taste and sired by Wishing Stone is owned by Anderson and Steve Smith and is trained by Anderson.

The amateur pacers and trotters in the GSY will be in the spotlight again next Friday night at the Big M. The pacers will have their final that goes for a purse of $16,000. Post time is scheduled for 6:15 p.m.
