Steve “You’re Never Too” Oldford wins Billings trot at the Summit County Fair

Northfield, OH – The ever-traveling CKG Billing, the granddaddy of all amateur driving series, moved back to the fast double-oval at Northfield Park for a $5,000 trot at the Summit Fair and when Steve ”You’re Never Too” Oldford sent the odds-on favorite, Smart Flight, to the lead and from there it was Katey bar the door as the 6-year-old Airzoom Lindy gelding cruised to an easy 1:58 victory.

“When there were three scratches and we moved into the five hole I felt fairly confident that if my horse raced to his abilities that we’d be tough to beat,” Oldford said. “He was strong when we left the gate and he was strong the entire mile.”

In a field shortened to seven starters after the late scratches, Oldford zipped his trotter to the front as Bob “Lumberman” Troyer and Ubanji yielded command and felt comfortable to sit a two-hole trip as the first quarter timer flashed 29 seconds.

Smart Flight and Ubanji were one-two as they passed the half in :59 and up the backside Oldford was looking for horses as he opened a two-length lead.

Gregg “Fast Greggy” Keidel was the first to move when he angled Mego Moss off the pylons but her progress was stalled when “Easy Dave” Russo took over third place with Osprey Vision as the leaders headed for the final turn.

But at the three quarters in 1:28.2 and still safely in front Smart Flight had two lengths on his challengers and in the lane Troyer and Ubanji made a futile run at Smart Flight but Oldford’s charge was still full of trot and went on to a 1-1/4 length victory. In the deep stretch “Tiny Tim” Miller hustled Holyholyguacamolie past Osprey Vision to garner the show dough.

The winner, a former road horse who didn’t begin racing until he was 5-years-old, is owned by Oldford Racing and trained by Jessica Roegner, He paid $3.60 for win.
