Supergill dies

Columbus, OH— Supergill, who won the 1987 Peter Haughton Memorial and later became a respected and successful stallion, died March 16 in Italy at the age of 34. His death was first reported on Sweden’s SulkySport website.

A son of Super Bowl out of Winky’s Gill bred by Castleton Farm and Ulf Moberg, Supergill was a $500,000 yearling purchase in 1986. For his career, he won eight of 22 races and earned $664,194.

Supergill went to stud at Castleton Farm starting with the 1989 breeding season. Among his offspring was Malabar Man, who won the 1997 Hambletonian on his way to Horse of the Year honors. He also sired Dan Patch Award winners Supergrit and Running Sea as well as former world-record-holder Giant Diablo.

Following the 1994 breeding season, Supergill was purchased by Italy’s Toniatti family and exported to Europe, where he enjoyed success. He was Italy’s champion stallion in 2002 and finished second on four occasions. He was a two-time champion in Norway and in 2003 he became the first non-Swedish stallion to receive honors as the top stallion from the Swedish Breeders Association.
