Columbus, OH — The website for the United States Trotting Association, www.ustrotting.com, took a first-place prize while Hoof Beats magazine won a second-place award in the 2014 American Horse Publications annual awards competition. The awards were presented during the AHP annual awards dinner at the Francis Marion Hotel in Charleston, S.C., on Saturday (June 21).

Webmaster Ron Fabiano and Web Graphic Designer Autumn Ryan were the winners in the Online Multimedia Equine-Related Editorial Event Coverage category for the USTA’s “Hambletonian 2013” mini-site.

“The placement of the video replays lets you get a feel for the event right away. The video reports from the show were professional and a great snapshot of the event. The Facebook and Twitter links were a nice addition to the event coverage. The news was a good mix of news and commentary, which made for a comprehensive and enjoyable take of the event. I appreciated how the landing page was organized; I was easily able to find all of the information,” according to the 2014 awards journal.

Hoof Beats writer Charlene Sharpe received the runner-up award in the Feature Single Article–Circulation Under 10,000 category for her August 2013 story “Double Blessing” about Bonnie and Clyde, Standardbred twins born to broodmare Miss Dreamboat for Delaware trainer Jim Atkinson.

“The writer brings the reader along on the foals’ journey, by turns both nail-biting and joyous, and demonstrates just how unique they are. Thoroughly reported and crisply written,” was how the awards journal described the story.

The AHP annual awards contest provides members with an opportunity to be recognized for excellence in equine publishing, print and online. For 2013, there were more than 50 classes, 735 entries and 97 contestants competing for the 38 first-place awards.
