Vorst closes to victory in Pocono feature

Wilkes-Barre, PA — Vorst sprang a 16-1 upset in the $14,000 featured pace on the Sunday (Sept. 27) twilight card at The Downs at Mohegan Sun Pocono during the Sunday twilight card, equaling her lifetime mark of 1:51.3 in the act.

Its Mesmerise N controlled early fractions of :26.4 and :56, before favorite Eclipse Me N advanced first-over to force a :27 third quarter with Vorst behind her. After stalking dueling leaders, Vorst tipple wide rallied steadily in the stretch and caught Eclipse Me N by a head. Marcus Miller drove Vorst for owner-trainer Gilbert Garcia-Herrera.

In one of four $12,000 sub-featured events, Nicholas Beach set the pace and then held off the charging pocket sitter Tito Rocks by a nose in 1:50.1 to remain undefeated in six seasonal outings. The 4-year-old Somebeachsomewhere gelding was driven by co-owner Brian Sears for trainer Jenn Bongiorno.

In another such event — this one for trotters — the 3-year-old Kadabra filly P L Notsonice tucked early from her outside post before advancing first-over and powering home in :55.2 to easily put away pacesetter Solar in 1:54. An Ontario Sires Stakes Gold winner at Rideau Carleton in 1:52.4 earlier this year, P L Notsonice prevailed for trainer Joe Skowyra and owner/driver Renaldo Morales III.

Marcus Miller and George Napolitano Jr. both drove three winners on the Sunday program.

When racing resumes at Pocono Monday (Sept. 28) at 12:30 p.m., there will be a $227,633.67 carryover in the Rainbow Pick-5.
