Wisconsin County Fair racing heats up on Sunday

by Rick Tittsler

Wautoma, WI — Wisconsin County Fair racing heats up in the cool northwoods on Sunday, August 16, at the Waushara County Fair. Post time is 12 noon at the “biggest little county fair in Wisconsin,” as it is billed by the organizers. In fact, the City of Wautoma’s population of 2,011 easily doubles on county fair days when there is harness racing scheduled!

In 2008, a 3-year-old filly named A Patchy Frost won her first race at Wautoma in 2:11 for trainer Russell Gald and driver Ben Gald. A Patchy Frost has since gone on to win $82,744 including wins at Balmoral Park (1:53.4) and Meadowlands Racetrack (1:51.2) for owner Jim Springer and his wife, Pat, who is originally from the Wautoma area. A Patchy Frost is taking the summer off in the Springers’ rolling pastures of southwest Wisconsin, before returning to train for winter racing on the east coast.

The Wisconsin Harness Horse Association has a pick-the-winner contest scheduled for each race, a 50-50 raffle drawing, and an “A Patchy Frost” contest that challenges the fans to pick the horse on the race card that will win the most purse money between race day 2009 and race day 2010. That’s right, it’s a year-long contest to keep the fans interested in harness racing until next year’s fair!

The Waushara County Fairgrounds is located in the heart of Wautoma in north-central Wisconsin, just south of State Routes 73 and 21. Travel time from Oshkosh or Stevens Point is only an hour, and it’s just 80 minutes from downtown Appleton or 95 minutes from Packers training camp in Green Bay.
