Beltrami, Zuccarello win NAADA events at Yonkers

Yonkers, NY — Tony Beltrami and Matt Zuccarello won their respective $10,000 North American Amateur Drivers Association trotting events before the Thursday (Sept. 23) card at Yonkers Raceway.

Both drivers took the front-end route to victory: Beltrami won with Dark Pool in 1:59.3, while Zuccarello reined Stealing home first in 2:02.2.

Beltrami had Dark Pool on the lead in the first split before a :29.1 first quarter. Once on top, the 8-year-old Cantab Hall gelding opened daylight on the field and cruised to a 4-1/2-length win over Ladys Big Stormont (Alan Schwartz). Momm’s My Dad (Joe Faraldo) finished third.

The second division was more competitive with three horses across the track when the photo finish camera flashed.

Stealing and Zuccarello vaulted to the lead at the start, and they led for the first three-quarters before facing a stern challenge from Gemini Eddie, whom Faraldo had in high gear on the far turn after a first-up move. Gemini Eddie gained command, but was joined by a three-wide Prescott (Joe Pennacchio) as the field headed for home. The three trotters battled across the track as they approached the finish line, but pacesetter Stealing and Zuccarello hung tough to defeat Prescott by a head. Gemini Eddie was a head farther back in third.
