Big closing weekend at The Meadowlands

East Rutherford, NJ — A record 10-cent superfecta and hefty Pick 4 payout topped the wagering action last week at the Meadowlands and bettors will have more opportunities to pounce on big pools this weekend.

The Meadowlands wraps up its 2007 Holiday Harness Meet with 13 races on Friday and Saturday night, nearly all of which are 10-horse fields. The Pick 4 carries a $50,000 guaranteed pool Saturday and $25,000 on Friday. The $1 Pick 4 paid $32,287 last Saturday, the fourth highest payoff of the year. It also marked the second time in four weeks that the wager returned more than $30,000. The $47,333 payout on Breeders Crown Night, Saturday, Nov. 24, was the highest of the year. Featuring a low 15 percent takeout, the Pick 4 requires bettors to correctly select the winners of four consecutive races.

The 10-cent superfecta in last Friday’s seventh race paid a record $18,994 — the whole pool for a dime. Another hefty sum was paid out on Saturday as the ninth race superfecta returned $5,164 for a dime. In November, the Meadowlands added two more nightly dime superfectas to its wagering menu, races seven and nine, to go along with the fourth and last race of each night. The track will continue to offer the four nightly superfectas in 2008. The superfecta requires the correct selection of the first four horses in order of finish.

Grandstand and Clubhouse admission is free on closing night of the 2007 Holiday Harness Meet, Saturday, Dec. 22. Mypanmar and Holborn Hanover top the gutsy field in the $46,500 Open Pace, the second leg of the Pick 4.

The Meadowlands will be dark the week of Dec. 23-29. The 2008 racing season kicks off Wednesday, Jan. 2. Post time is 7:00 p.m. in the New Year.
