Toronto, ON — Camaes Fellow pulled off a 14-1 shocker in the C$170,000 Ontario Sires Stakes Gold Final for sophomore pacing colts and geldings on Saturday night (Oct. 15) at Woodbine Racetrack.
The Tony O’Sullivan trained-Camaes Fellow (Doug McNair) was the quickest off the gate, but the heavy favorite Prodigal Seelster (Scott Zeron) and Mystician (Jody Jamieson), who was second choice, were on the longshot’s heels. The trio was three-wide as they entered the turn, but Mystician was able to clear past the :27.1 opening panel.
A parked out Prodigal Seelster was able to take command before the half in :55.1 and he held the lead past the three-quarters in 1:23.1.
In the stretch, Camaes Fellow was able to find open racetrack as McNair angled him to the outside. The gelding dug in to score his first Gold Final trophy by a half-length over a hard closing Mystician in 1:53. Prodigal Seelster faded to third.
“He can leave great and stalking the two best horses in the race, you couldn’t have scripted it any better really,” O’Sullivan said following the win.
The Cambridge resident believes Camaes Fellow may need some time off before the OSS Super Finals on Nov. 12 at the Rexdale oval.
“We raced him fairly easy last week and I’ll probably race him once for sure, maybe twice more before the Super Final,” he said. “We still have a month so we won’t over race him, but he will be ready to go for the Super Final.”
The 3-year-old son of Mach Three-Camae has won four races in 18 seasonal starts, including his division of the Canadian Breeders Championship in a 66-1 upset at Mohawk. The five-time career winner now boasts lifetime earnings of C$264,738 for owner Frank Bellino.
Camaes Fellow paid $30.60 to win.
Delcrest Julian was the one pulling a rabbit out of the hat on Saturday night when he defeated divisional leader Daylon Magician in the C$170,000 Ontario Sires Stakes Gold Final for 3-year-old trotting colts and geldings. With Paul MacDonell in the sulky, the Rick Zeron pupil prevented Daylon Magician from extending his win streak to eight.
Canadian Trotting Classic champ Daylon Magician (Jack Moiseyev) got away fifth as Imperial Count (Scott Zeron) went straight to the front. Imperial Count set the tempo as he held the lead through fractions of :28, :57.1 and 1:25.2, but into the backstretch, Delcrest Julian had launched a first-over attack from fourth.
Sent off at 6-1, Delcrest Julian trotted on by the leader in deep stretch to score the 2-1/2 length triumph in 1:55.1. Daylon Magician was able to rally for second place. Sim Brown (Randy Waples) finished third.
“I talked to Rick (Friday) about the horse,” said MacDonell following the victory. “Actually, I drove him one other time for Rick at Flamboro (on August 7 in an OSS Gold elimination) and the horse has come a long way since then, so he was super tonight.
“I thought if I was up near the front (as they turned for home) that would be great,” he added. “He is such a strong horse there never seems to be an end to him so I knew some horse would have to come a pretty good last quarter to take him down.”
The son of Oaklea Julian-Stars Balance has won four races in 15 seasonal starts. The five-time career winner now has lifetime earnings of C$285,597 for owner Terry Hunter.
Delcrest Julian paid $15.20 to win.
