Classic Series: Three world records and a track record

DOVER, Del. —Three world records, another track record, and two sub 1:50 miles by one driver highlighted a brilliant night of trotting and pacing speed at Dover Downs on Classic Series Supermonday, April 19. The complete card was fastest combined speed record ever for a racing program on a five-eighths mile track.

Windylane Hanover, driven by Ron Pierce wore down Dresden Dolly on the backstretch to take the lead and then pulled away for a 1:53.2 world record performance for a trotting mare age five and up.

Luckyisasluckydoes became the fastest pacing gelding, Bunny Lake, the fastest mare pacer, and Windylane Hanover set a world record for a older mare winning their Classic Series events. Y Chance It set a track record for a senior gelding trotter. A 1:49.4 performance by Art Maker equaled the former world record for an altered pacer but came after Luckyisasluckydoes’ 1:49.1 win.

Cliff and Herb Siegel and John Fodera’s Luckyisasluckydoes was awesome in a wire-to-wire 1:49.1 victory to win the $85,000 Pacing Classic. George Brennan, winning driver of three Classics, left quickly with the 5-year-old altered son of Camluck and took nine followers to the quarter in :26, then a :54 half and continued to motor on the backstretch when challenged tripping the timer at 1:21.4 for three quarters. There was no contest in the stretch as Luckyisasluckydoes was all alone at the wire equaling the world and track record of 1:49.1 first established by Riyadh (Luc Ouellette) in 1996 and tied by Cam Knows Best (Cat Manzi) in 2000, giving Dover Downs all three world marks

In the $85,000 Classic Distaff, Hall of Famer John Campbell rolled W Springtime Racing Stable and trainer John Stark, Jr.’s Bunny Lake away from the gate quickest of all from post eight to take the lead at the start. The 2001 Harness Horse of the Year then led for the rest of another world record mile for an older mare pacer of 1:50.2 breaking the former record set last November by Eternal Camnation in a 2003 Classic Distaff at Dover Downs. Carolina Sunshine (Brian Sears) was a close second. Artistic Vision (Mike Lachance) was third with Jasper Avenue (Luc Ouellette) fourth, unable to get through a wall of mares before her. World champion Eternal Camnation finished out of the money.

Y Chance It, owned by Ron O’Neill, Paul Larrabee and Linda Franklin, broke equipment before the start of the race resulting in a recall. After the change of equipment, Randy Fritz took the Ontario-bred gelding right to the front and never was headed in a powerful 1:53.4 triumph another track record for an older gelding trotter. JM VanGogh (Jim Morand), owned in part by trainer Paul Chambers of Harrington, Del. and John Mello, closed with a rush to finish second in front of Center Field (Cat Manzi). Fool’s Goal was a late scratch.

In the first of six Classic Series events, one of two $60,000 Classic Oaks divisions, Lost Lady One, owned by Andray and Lindwood farms of Pennsylvania, broke the track record for an older mare with a 1:54.4 victory. It was the first of three record performances for a horse driven by George Brennan.

Stroke Play (Brian Sears), in her first start of the season, raced bravely to finish second. Under My Thumb (Luc Ouellette) was the show finisher.

In the second $60,000 section, Windylane Hanover, driven by Ron Pierce for owners Charles Keller III and IV and trainer Brett Bittle, wore down Dresden Dolly on the backstretch to take the lead and then pulled away for a 1:53.2 world record performance for a trotting mare age five and up. Dresden Dolly (Trevor Ritchie) was second. Gypsy Balance (John Campbell) finished third.

Mindee B and Allister Stables’ Elegant Man won the first of two $60,000 divisions of The Trotting Classic, in 1:54.3, with Hall of Famer Cat Manzi in the bike. This was the only non-record event in Classic Series races. Danish Delight (Jack Baggitt) finished second in front of Diamond Goal (Ron Pierce).

On the undercard, in a $32,500 Preferred Handicap pace, Cuzzins Stable’s Art Maker joined the exclusive sub-1:50 club on a five-eighths mile track equaling the world record for an older gelding when George Brennan stormed three-wide on the backstretch to get the lead and then destroyed all opposition in a 1:49.4 victory. Crew Cut Zach (Brian Sears) and front-pacing Black Cat Bone (Jim Morand) were second and third, respectively.

Getaway Hall, owned by Brooks Stable and John Hynansky, shot to the front at the start and led the rest of a 1:54 mile to score his third win of the year in a $30,000 Delaware Special. Future Treasure (Art Stafford, Jr.) closed from far back to be a close second. Bedrock Café N (David Miller) finished third.

The slowest races on the 15-race card were 1:54.1, 1:54.3, 1:54.4 and 1:55 miles. Eleven wins were clocked in 1:53.4 or faster.

The final day of live racing will be Thursday, April 22. Racing starts at 4:30 p.m. (EDT). There is no charge for parking or admission. Reservations are suggested for the Winner’s Circle Restaurant, call (302) 674-4600.
