Colt by first crop sire wins Italian Trotting Derby

Derby Italiano del Trotto, the richest Trotting Derby in Europe with a purse for the winner of $330,000 was won by Charmant de Zack with Antonio de Nardo in the bike.

Charmant de Zack came from behind and got past Capital Mail and long leading favorite Callmethebreeze to win the 1-5/8th mile event in 1:58.3f.

Charmant de Zack hails from the first crop of top Italian trotter Vivid Wise As (he by Yankee Glide). Vivid Wise As is still racing and recently won an elimination in the Gran Premio Lotteria. His first crop from 2018 is at 58 foals.

The Derby, as well as the Oaks, was a big success for Italian bred stallions.

In the Derby, three of the first four finishers were sired by Italian stallions. Capital Mail, who finished second, and Chuky Roc, who finished fourth, are sired by Nad Al Sheba (he by Windsong’s Legacy).

The Oaks was won by Crystal Pan with Enrico Bellei, timed in 1:56.2f on the mile. Crystal Pan is sired by Italian sire Ideale Luis (he by Lemon Dra), who for many years was champion sire in Italy.
