Final PASS prelims solidify next week’s finals

Chester, PA — Cando Volo and Portulaca signaled their readiness for next week’s Pennsylvania Sire Stakes championships by taking new lifetime marks in their respective $73,635 final-round divisions of the series for 2-year-old trotting fillies, held Sunday (Aug. 28) at Harrah’s Philadelphia.

Cando Volo was the faster winner by a tick, rallying to win in 1:55.2. The Cantab Hall-No I’m Not miss sat in the pocket behind Angelpedia and her factions of :27.2, :56.3 and 1:25.3, then accelerated to catch that filly by a half length over a speed-favoring track. Corey Callahan, who also won two Stallion Series divisions, drove 15-1 upsetter Cando Volo for trainer Vernon Beachy and owner Ryan Smith.

In the other division, the Donato Hanover-Motivational miss Portulaca captured the top spot among her preliminaries’ point winners with her third win in five career starts (two-for-four in the PASS), this one in 1:55.3. Montrell Teague kept the Kathleen LaMontagne-trained filly, whom she co-owns with Donald LaMontagne, in the two-hole almost all the way through fractions of :28.3, :57.2 and 1:26.3, popping out near the three-quarters, going to the lead, then holding off a late bid by Tipsy Moni by 1-1/4 lengths.

Callahan’s Stallion Series double came with Totally Relentless (1:57.1) and Foolish Moni (1:57.2). Brady Brown also notched a Stallion Series double, teaming up with Jameson N Lime (1:57.2) and Fortune Forecast (1:57.4). Lindys Irishcream (Simon Allard, 1:57) completed the quintet of victorious fillies in the lower circuit’s $20,000 splits.

Harrah’s Philadelphia will host all four Sire Stakes championships for 2-year-olds next Sunday (Sept. 4) on a card offering over $1 million in purses.
