Shelbyville, IN — Two weeks after capturing the $200,000 Indiana Sires Stakes final for freshman pacing colts, Fridaynightflight picked up right where he left off as a new round of preliminary legs kicked off on Saturday (September 24) at Indiana Downs.
The Panspacificflight gelding won his $40,000 division, one of three on the card, with a 1:53.4 effort. Josh Sutton piloted the 2-year-old to a five length advantage in the night’s eighth race.
Drawing post two in the field of eight, Sutton and Fridaynightflight got away fourth behind early leader Mykindachip, Babe’s I Scoot and Brown Titan. After a :27 opening panel, Sutton moved the favorite first up, advancing to second through a :56.3 half and reaching the top on the way to the three-quarters (1:26.1).
Up by three at the top of the stretch, the Fox Stake winner dashed home in :27.3 to collect his fourth win in 10 starts. Mykindachip and Dan Shetler finished second, with Bet On Art, driven by Trace Tetrick, third.
The first foal from the Grinfromeartoear mare Ramblin Rosie, Fridaynightflight is owned by trainer Roger Welch in partnership with Bo De Long and his son, Pat. Bred by Nina Paddock, the gelding raised his earnings to $215,557 with the victory.
After suffering his first career defeat in the $200,000 final on September 10, fellow Panspacificflight freshman Next Flight In rebounded with a 1:53.4 score Saturday. With Peter Wrenn at the controls, the gelding left from post three and received every call, reaching the wire 4-1/2 lengths in front. Be Pacific and Thiswayorthehighwy hit the board in second and third, respectively.
Bred by Edward Miller, Next Flight In improved his record to eight wins in nine starts. The 2-year-old son of the Ideal Society mare Society Brat is owned by Mystical Marker Farms LLC, Mary Jane Anderson and Jack and Peggy Hood. Trained by Erv Miller, the gelding has earned $115,000 for his connections.
Jammin Joshua claimed victory in the third $40,000 division, using a :27.2 last quarter to edge favorite Fritz Bow by a quarter length in 1:54.2. Guided by Sam Widger, the Allamerican Captor-My Girl Maddie colt earned his fourth win in eight starts. Ernie Gaskin trains the 2-year-old owned by his daughter, Emily. Bred by David Wayne Yoder, Jammin Joshua has finished first or second in seven of eight starts. The colt has earned $84,150 this season.
