Campbellville, ON — After scoring a victory in her elimination last week, Gisela AS scored an off-the-pace win in Monday night’s (August 1) C$50,000 In Free final at Mohawk. Driven by Jason Brewer and trained by Anette Lorentzon, the freshman filly stopped the clock in 1:58.2, one-fifth off the stakes record.
In the early going, Idonette (Luc Ouellette) led past the opening quarter in :29.2. Kylie Hall (Doug Brown) was also well positioned in the pocket with Bavarde (Sylvain Filion) third. Heading towards the half, Bavarde moved to the outside and took over command with post time favorite Its All Magic (Randy Waples) also on the move. Its All Magic would overtake Bavarde past the midway point in :59.4.
Its All Magic would continue to lead past three-quarters in 1:29.3. Princess Fortune (Anthony MacDonald) was first-over with Gisela AS tracking her.
Down the stretch, Princess Fortune tracked down the tempo-setter, but could not hold off a hard-closing Gisela AS, who scored the victory in the final strides. Bavarde completed the triactor with Its All Magic finishing fourth.
“She has been a good filly all winter,” Lorentzon commented following the win. “She’s not very big, but she’s got some fight in her and a terrific attitude.”
Given the right trip, Lorentzon was confident in her charge.
“When she was second-over around the final turn, I thought we had a good shot. With these young horses, you never know what can happen, but she was put in a good spot and she trotted home well.”
Lorentzon also noted that the daughter of Infinitif remains eligible to the Kentucky Sires Stakes this season.
Gisela AS now has a new lifetime best and rookie earnings of C$35,325 for owner Acl Stuteri Ab.
