Grand Cayman gritty in Dover Open

Dover, DE — Grand Cayman dug in late for a 1:52.3 victory in the $28,500 Blue Hen Open Handicap Pace at Bally’s Dover on Thursday night (Dec. 1).

Grand Cayman left at the start and waited for Mack to clear for the early lead. Tim Tetrick then rallied Grand Cayman to the front past the quarter in :27.1. Grand Cayman continued on the engine, reaching the half in :55.4 before Sprocket, a winner in his last four starts, raced advanced first-up from fourth. The pair raced as a team to three-quarters in 1:24, and Sprocket dueled into the lead turning for home. After being headed, Grand Cayman dug back in late and battled to the wire, winning by a hard-fought length in 1:52.3 and paying $4.60 as the bettors’ choice. Shoobee Doo A (driven by Corey Callahan) finished second off a cover trip; Mack (Michael Cole) held third from his pocket position.

After being headed by Sprocket on the final turn, Grand Cayman battled back stoutly in the stretch to win Thursday’s featured pace at Bally’s Dover. Fotowon photo.
