GSY Finale on Hambo Eve Recap

East Rutherford, NJ – There was just two GSY pace races on Friday night (Aug. 5), the day before the Hambletonian at the Meadowlands, but they didn’t disappoint.

In the first race, there were several leavers vying for the top spot and after a fast quarter in :27.1, Shellie De Vie guided Jake Stillwell to the front. She held the lead almost to the half, but the pace slowed down to a crawl (:59 half mile) and caused some confusion as the leader stopped just after the half.

That’s when the outer flow started moving with Bruce’s Magic (JamesSlendorn) gaining command and looked in control heading into the stretch. He was collared late by Deerfield Beach (Anthony Verruso) who went on to the victory with Slendorn holding second and River Dali (Robert Hechkoff) rounding out the trifecta. The mile was timed in 1:55.2. The 8-year old gelding is owned by Clint Crellin out of NY and is trained by Symon Spicer.

In the fifth race, filled with a ton of speed, the start didn’t disappoint. After a wicked :26.1 quarter, Dream Out Loud N (Tony Beltrami) took command and put Ferdinand A (James Slendorn) in the pocket. These two went around the track and in the stretch, the leader drifted out and Slendorn took a slight advantage but somehow, Beltrami had a late surge to come back and win in 1:52.1. Longshot Causway (McKenzie Sowers) rounded out the trifecta. The 15-year- old veteran is owned by Beltrami out of PA and trained by Edwin Quevedo.

The GSY will be on a little hiatus from the Big M and should be back sometime in late September on Friday nights. Thank you to all of the support the Big M has provided the series, along with the trainers and owners who put in their horses to have full fields for the betting public to wager on. A special thanks goes out to GSY President Dave Yarock, who has continued to invest his time and efforts in getting these weekly events scheduled.
