James “Bubba” Huggins Jr., 87, dies

Columbus, OH — James Albert “Bubba” Huggins Jr., 87, died Oct. 14, 2022.

Born in Timmonsville, S.C., Mr. Huggins was the son of the late James Albert Huggins Sr. and Evelyn Phillips Huggins. He was a graduate of the University of South Carolina with a bachelor of science degree in business. He served his country in the U.S. Army.

Mr. Huggins was a member of the Timmonsville Southern Methodist Church.

Known affectionately as “Bubba” by many of his friends and family, he spent most of his professional career owning, driving, and training Standardbreds. His Standardbred career took him to the Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern United States with many winters spent in the Timmonsville area doing winter training. During his last foray on the Mid-Atlantic scene, he was associated with the Ellis Myer stable in Harrington, Del.

Mr. Huggins is survived by his wife, Karen Sinclair Huggins; nieces, Evelyn (David) Beckroge, Robin (Calvin) McRoy, and Laura Reasonover; his wife’s children, Devin Scott and Neill (Jennifer) Scott; and a special lifelong friend, Carroll (Karen) Young. His sister, Frances Huggins McLaughlin, with whom he shared a mutual devotion, preceded him in death on Aug. 26, 2002.
