Jean Guy Roberge, 89, dies

Columbus, OH — Jean Guy Roberge, 89, died peacefully on Oct. 19, 2022, in Virginia following a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

Jean Guy Roberge died Oct. 19, 2022.

A longtime trainer/driver/caretaker, he dedicated his life to harness racing. Early in his career he took care of such greats as Champ Volo and Tie Silk. In the 1970s and 80s, he worked his way up to his own stable, racing primarily at Roosevelt, Meadowlands and Yonkers. As the industry changed, he worked at many tracks and training facilities, always ending up in Florida for the winter breaking young ones. He worked with the horses until he reached his mid-seventies when the disease prevented him from continuing.

Mr. Roberge was loved by many who knew him and will be greatly missed.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Gisele, and is survived by his children, Denis (Lucille), Pierre (Hugo) and Louise (Fred) Kurzrock; grandchildren, Monique Wink (Victoria), Dominick, Julia Kurzrock and Nicole Kurzrock; and many brothers, sisters, nieces, and nephews. He was also preceded in death by his companion, Beatrice De Leon.

A memorial will be set up at a later date as well as a GoFundMe to assist in his memorial and funeral costs.
